Skandies
By way of explanation
About a decade ago, my film writings on Usenet forum rec-arts-movies (mostly “current films” and “past films”) caught a favorable eye from some of the regulars there. Mike D’Angelo invited me to participate in his invitation-only annual poll, which became known as the Skandies (he provides some of the lowdown here — I’m the “Pinochet-admiring lunatic,” if there was any doubt). The poll has continued to this day, even though nobody among the group posts to Usenet any more, some of us have gone on to become professional film critics, and we’re now as much a circle of friends as anything else, with an annual reunion in Toronto every September. I simply put up this page to record for posterior.
The complicated format is as follows. Nine categories, with six of them being identical to the Oscars — best film, best director, and the four acting categories. There is only one category for scripts; and there is one unique category called “best scene,” which I think is pretty self-explanatory. One other category, undistributed films, is for movies that played in festivals two years previously but had never since had a commercial release in New York City (films that get released in New York are eligible for the main voting provided they are less than two years old). I only participated in that category for the 2006 poll, because that’s been the only year I’ve seen at least 10 such films.
In each category, you get 100 points to distribute to exactly 10 films, performances, scripts, etc. Not 9 or 11. The minimum is 5 points and the maximum is 30, but otherwise, you can distribute your 100 points as you see fit. Supporting vs. lead is under the judgment of each person for his own ballot (if a performance gets points in both categories, it is placed in whichever category it got the more points in, but keeps all the points awarded).
Anyway … here are my past ballots. I should note that they reflect what I thought at the time, and so have changed none of them. For example, BLACK HAWK DOWN and LA PIANISTE would both rank among my Top 5 for their years (2001 and 2002), though neither even made the Top 10 at the time.
